Vacation rental booking tips and tricks:

When to visit & When to book:

  • The sooner you can book a vacation home, the easier your search will be. The best vacation homes are booked very early. Reserving your rental home up to 12 months before your vacation is recommended. Winter holidays are excellent times to search for and book your rental home.
  • To get the best value, try changing your group's trip dates to the Spring or Fall shoulder seasons. May, September, and October offer excellent weather, fewer crowds, and reduced traffic.
  • Veterans and Active Duty Military members may qualify for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property owner or host whether your family qualifies for a price reduction.
  • Property management companies typically offer renters an option to buy vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which generally will cost anywhere between 1% - 5% of the base booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for missed days as a result of medical-related issues or weather, as well as hurricane evacuation charges, such as an unanticipated hotel stay or additional gas expenses. Trip insurance might be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask the property owner for details.
  • Often, property management companies and vacation rental houses supply Morehead City area travel guides which include special deals, either offered directly by local companies, or through a relationship between the property management company and the business itself. You can also find visitors guide and coupon books at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers.

Use filters to search efficiently:

  • Start by having your group choose dates and a max budget.
  • Note the number bedrooms and the configuration you need. 4BR Ocean Front - Dogs OK! has 4 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms.
  • Precise information about bedrooms and bed counts & types is normally accessible online. If not, contact the property owner before you book your rental. Note that most listings specify the maximum guest capacity, which typically includes sofa beds and bunks. You will need to establish which bed configuration is suitable for your vacation.
  • If your group is vacationing with pets, you will need a property that allows animals. Ask for information on breed, weight, and type requirements. Note that some property managers require additional pet deposits and fees.
  • Visiting for a specific attraction or event? Try a map search to locate nearby rentals.
  • Proper accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for those with limited mobility. .

More considerations:

  • Add the host's phone number to your phone. Understand and take a copy of check in/check out procedures.
  • Ask questions. You may want instructions for a garage door opener, elevator or WIFI setup. Contact your host. They are there to help! A brief text message can prevent many problems.
  • Protect the owner (and your stuff!) by keeping the rental locked up while you are out, just like you would at home.
  • Upon arrival, document any damages to the rental property and immediately contact the host. Keep records of all correspondence just in case a dispute arises.
  • Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like obnoxious vacationers disrupting your peace. Use the golden rule for best judgement. Happy residents may even recommend great local food and places you would have never otherwise known!
  • Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Residents can often help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to order the best nachos, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for shopping?
  • Re-check the rental property to make sure that you've packed all personal items at check-out. Make sure to check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden items. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Go through the rental one final time and scan for damage. We suggest inspecting the property with the host whenever possible. If the host is not available, remember to take video and pictures of the property to record its condition.
  • Did your group have a great time? Many rental management companies make it easy for travelers to provide reviews. If your rental property and/or property manager was terrific, they would love to hear it. If anything was imperfect and they failed to address it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make it a point as part of your feedback.
