Salter Path and Emerald Isle visitors don’t have to venture very far, or even off island, to get a glimpse into the works of a regionally and nationally acclaimed artist, thanks to the homegrown Leni Newell Studios and Gallery. Found in the small town of Salter Path in the heart of the Crystal Coast, this acclaimed artist has a working studio as well as a small gallery of her works, which are readily available for art lovers to admire, and purchase, on an inspired trip off the beach.
Leni Newell has been a professional artist since 1986, and her unique works are a combination of mixed media and collage. A recipient of a Regional Artist Project Grant from The United Arts Council of Raleigh & Wake County, her innovative and award-winning works have been exhibited in galleries and museums all across the country. The Cape Lookout National Seashore is a 56-mile long stretch of the Southern Outer Banks barrier island terrain that runs from Ocracoke Inlet to the northeast side of Beaufort Inlet. Comprised of three separate islands – the North Core Banks, the South Core Banks, and the Shackleford Banks – this wonderfully remote destination can only be accessed by a personal vessel, or a privately operated ferry or water taxi. As a result, it’s world-renowned for its miles of undeveloped and scenic beaches, its remarkable fishing, its exceptional shelling, and its abundant wildlife that thrives in the undisturbed and inherently wild environment.
Morehead City was the brainchild of John Motley Morehead, governor of North Carolina from 1841 to 1845. Governor Morehead foresaw the commercial potential of Shepherd's Point, the promontory at the intersection of the Newport River and Beaufort Inlet, and envisioned "a great commercial city" there. Morehead and his associates acquired a large portion of the surrounding property and then made plans to extend the North Carolina Railroad from Goldsboro to Shepherd's Point.
