Tips and Tricks for getting the best Emerald Isle vacation rental experience:

Sticking to your rental budget:

  • Reserve your rental as early as possible. Rental schedules generally open 12 months in advance (or in September just after Summertime ends). Many groups book their Summer vacation rentals during holiday gatherings. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
  • To find the best value, shift your group's trip dates to the Spring or Fall seasons. May, September, and October offer pleasant weather, less crowded beaches, and greatly reduced traffic. Many vacationers use this strategy to find larger homes within budget, or to reserve an oceanfront rental that would otherwise be unaffordable during the high season. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook Winter holidays for a Morehead City vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation on the coast? Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years are great times to gather with friends and family at the beach.
  • Veterans and Active Duty Military members may qualify for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property management company or host whether your family qualifies for a price reduction.
  • Management companies and individual rental owners typically offer guests an option to add trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which generally will cost anywhere between 1% - 5% of the base booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any missed time as a result of personal medical-related issues or weather, as well as hurricane evacuation costs, such as an unanticipated hotel overnight or extra gas expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a life-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your host for additional information.
  • Often, rental management companies and vacation rental houses supply Morehead City area visitor guides which will include coupons, either offered independently by local companies, or through a relationship with the property management company and the business itself. You can also find Morehead City area magazine and coupon books at local shops and grocery stores.

Use filters to search efficiently:

  • Start by having your group choose dates and a spending budget.
  • Note the number bedrooms and what type of bedroom configuration your family requires. Bermuda House, Almost Oceanfront House in Emerald Isle, NC! has 6 bedrooms and 8 bathrooms.
  • Precise descriptions of bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is almost always available on booking pages. If they are not listed, call the host before booking the rental. Remember that most property listings specify the maximum guest capacity, which typically includes pull-out couches. You'll need to work out what bed configuration is optimal for your trip.
  • Some rentals allow pets, but some do not. Acceptable types of dog or cat, size and breeds may be restricted, and added fees may apply. Ask the host about allowable pet guidelines before booking.
  • Are you visiting for a single attraction? Use a map search to locate nearby properties.
  • Suitable accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for those with limited mobility. Confirm all required amenities are available and included before reserving a rental

More considerations:

  • Review check in & check out procedures before leaving home. Take a printed copy, and add a note with the instructions to your phone.
  • Ask questions. You may need instructions for a hot tub, stereo or WIFI setup. Contact your property manager. They are there to help! A brief text message prevents quite a few difficulties.
  • Lock your rental home while you're out and about. Protect the owner's property and your stuff!
  • Document any issues with the property upon arrival, and immediately contact the owner. We specifically recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain time stamps that can be helpful if a dispute is filed.
  • Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like obnoxious visitors bothering your peace and quiet. Employ the golden rule for common sense. Happy residents may even recommend great local food and places you would've never otherwise known!
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Local residents can usually help you find exactly what you're looking for. Who better to ask where to enjoy a steak with a view, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for crabbing?
  • At departure, take a walk-through to confirm you haven't leave anything behind. Remember to check closets, dressers, garages, and bathrooms for hidden treasure. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Go through the property one final time and keep an eye out for any damage. We suggest walking through with the host whenever possible. If the property manager isn't available, remember to take photos and video of the rental to record its condition at check-out.
  • Remember to leave a review! Hosts rely on good ratings to compel new reservations. They'll be thankful for your feedback. Alternatively, if something wasn't as described, other families will be thankful you shared your experience find their best vacation home. Be fair with your review. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the manager could control the issue, and if so, whether they responded quickly to remedy it.
